When
choosing a dining, kitchen, or bistro table, remember to shop for function
and durability as well as for aesthetic. Tables are one of the most
used areas for both dining and projects, its essential to look for surfaces
that can withstand stains, markings and scratching.
Always measure the height as well as the width and length
of the area you intend to use for your table. Higher tables are a new
and lasting trend, but only look natural in rooms with higher ceilings.
Remember to consider hanging light fixtures in your measurements. Also
include the amount of space needed to move chairs from the table and
for guests to sit away from the table. The most fashionable of tables
in too cramped an area will lose its luster.
Glass, ceramic, concrete and wood tabletops are all available.
Choosing a tabletop will depend largely on the amount of work one does
at the table, and the area it is located. Hardwoods and durable surfaces
should be considered for high traffic areas. Also remember to purchase
a tablecloth for those busy days and special occassions. Tablecloths
should hang only 8" to 12" over the edge of the table. Tabletop
pads are also helpful for kitchen tables and homework or paperwork areas.
