Choosing nursery décor is not something
that should be taken lightly. The things you choose to place
in the child’s nursery can help develop children’s
cognitive skills at an early age.
That’s not to say that you can’t go out and try
to decorate things as cute as possible, but there needs to be
some reasons for making the choices you make aside from the
simple fact that it is cute.
During the first few months and first few years of life, a
child learns much about the world round him. The fact that he
will spend a large part of his time in the nursery means that
he needs to have things in there that will help him learn and
feel comforted.
By including items that do this for your child, you are giving
him a head start on life. Even though it may seem that a nursery
is only important because it gives the child to sleep, this
is not true.
So, now that you understand the importance of having a cute
and an educational nursery, you are now able to better understand
what kinds of things you can have in the nursery to help you
achieve these goals.
Some of the more practical and popular nursery décor
items are:
• Convertible furniture – Because baby furniture
can be expensive, it would be wise to be able to have as much
furniture that can double as something else later down the line.
Making the initial purchase will allow you to avoid additional
expense later down the road.
A prime example of this would be a changing table that can
be used for years as a dresser long after your child is out
of diapers. Another good thing to buy would be a bed that converts
from a crib to a toddler bed to a twin bed. The initial cost
may be a little more, but you’ll save money in the long
run.
Also, because your child will still be able to stay in essentially
the same bed for many years, it will not be nearly as difficult
to transition from one bed to the next.
• Consider less carpet – If you already have a
child then you probably already understand why this is important.
Kids are messy. Therefore it is safe to assume that the more
carpet you have, the more likely it is going to be messed p
by a child sooner or later.
By including nursery décor like rugs that can be washed,
you’ll save yourself from having to get a carpet cleaner
to visit once a month. Also, having different kinds of surfaces
can be beneficial for your child in learning the difference
between colors and hard and soft.
• Don’t forget about yourself – Even though
the nursery décor is primarily for your child, you shouldn’t
forget that you will also have some needs that will need to
be met. It certainly would be nice if all babies slept all through
the night, but the reality of the situation is that this rarely
happens.
Therefore, you should expect to spend a lot of time with your
child in there. That means that you should include some nursery
décor items for yourself. Most importantly, perhaps,
is you are going to need a place to sit.
Actually, having a nice, comfortable seat is also nice because
it gives the mother/father and child an opportunity to spend
a little extra time together. This gives the child a little
extra time to feel comforted and grow the bond between parent
and child.
After you have secured this, you may want to get a small television
or something of the like to keep your mind occupied at 3:30
a.m. when your child is not sleeping.
Nursery décor certainly can be cute, and you should
try to make it as cute as you want it to be, but it is also
important to remember that cuteness is not the sole factor in
decorating a nursery. Those who remember this are better able
to teach their children important things at a younger age.
