When
choosing nautical décor consider not only what items to purchase,
but also where you plan to place them in your home. A nautical theme
in a bathroom, for instance, will vary from a nautical theme in a bedroom.
For the purposes of this guide, a boy’s bedroom will be the
focus of the room that receives the nautical motif.
However, it still is certainly possible to decorate places like kitchens,
living rooms, bathrooms, and dens with the same kinds of styles.
The good thing about undertaking a project like this is the fact that
you don’t have to rely on your own creative skills to best understand
what would work best in the room. In fact, your number one source for
help is the son or daughter for whom the room is being created.
Because it is your child’s room, it would be best to let your
child in on the planning process. He or she may be able to come up
with some ideas that you may not have thought of yourself.
Of course, little minds sometimes need a nudge in the right direction.
One way to encourage the creative juices to flow within your child is
to take him or her to the docks or the beach. Being in a place like
this will allow your child to see the things that come and go like boats,
barges, ships and animals like seagulls and ducks.
If there isn’t a dock close by, you can take the child to the
aquarium. Here he will be able to see all kinds of marine life that
could provoke ideas. Read stories or watch movies with a seaworthy theme
together.
Before you take off on your excursion, it is best to talk to your
child and explain to him the purpose of the trip. You may want to
bring a long a pen and a piece of paper so that you can write down
ideas that come to you. Encourage your child to speak out about the
things he or she likes as well and you can also write these down.
Once you have finished your idea-gathering part of the design process,
it is now time to implement the ideas that came to you and your child
while on your trips.
The first step to decorating any room is to focus on the big objects
and then gradually work your way to the smaller items in the room.
That means that you need to decide what you want to serve as the
focal item in your room. For some people, they choose to make a nice,
big painting on the wall. Some people choose to paint a big boat,
while others like to use an underwater motif. Let your child help
with this process. Don’t worry, walls can be repainted!
Once this focal point is selected and created, you can then work on
all the other smaller items that will accentuate this focal point in
the room.
One of the more fun things that people choose to use are porthole
type windows hanging on the walls. If you want to be creative, you can
put the “window” right on top of a painting of a fish or
other marine life. This will give the illusion to your child that the
room is a submarine.
Of course, there may be many other nautical décor ideas that
may come to you. The important thing is that you use your imagination
and do something that will make both you and your child happy.
