The
roots of moose decor are the same as the roots of taxidermy, which is
the art of reproducing or mounting animals for display purposes. With
demands for better quality of leather and hides growing, the sophistication
of tannery methods rapidly evolved in the 1700s. During the 1800s, hunters
would often bring their prized acquisitions into upholstery shops, where
the skins would be sewn up and crudely stuffed with rags and cotton.
The methods of taxidermy in use today began their evolution in the
early 20th century. At that time, taxidermists began to focus on learning
proper animal anatomy to enable the reproduction of lifelike poses for
realistic animals. Moose decor makes use of such animal trophies to
give a room an air of accomplishment and success in the realm of man's
battle with the harsher parts of nature.
Though often associated with rustic cabins, the sensibility of moose
decor is no longer preferred solely by those who live in a hunting culture.
Many people may choose to display animal trophies in appreciation for
the beauty of animal design or for interests in the science of taxidermy.
Because people don't hunt as often as they used to, animal specimens
created for display also fall into the niche of antiques.
