A
mixer is an appliance used in the kitchen for mixing, folding, beating,
and whipping various food ingredients. It comes in two different styles.
The first is the hand mixer, the second is a stand mixer.
The electric hand mixer uses a motor to power one or two beaters,
which are immersed in the food that is being mixed. To aid in use, it
has a handle, while the beaters are often removable to aid in cleaning.
These mixers evolved from the first hand-cranked egg beater which was
developed in 1870.
The stand mixer performs the same function as the hand mixer. This
machine however is mounted on a stand and is larger with a more powerful
motor. Stand mixers usually have a bowl which is secured in place as
well. These appliances often come with a variety of attachments, including
wire whips, flat beaters, and dough hooks.
