Microwaves
are a fairly recent invention in the history of mankind. Ovens are known
to have been used since 3200 B.C., the time of the Indus Valley Civilization.
The use of the microwave oven, on the other hand, wasn't possible until
1945 when Percy Spencer realized the possibility of cooking food with
microwaves while working on radar sets. The first microwave often was
created two years later. It was called the Radarange and was 750 pounds
and nearly six feet tall!
At first, microwaves were large, heavy, and very expensive. Once lighter
and more affordable versions were built, however, it didn't take much
time for these useful machines to become widespread during the 1970s.
Today, many homes would seem incomplete without a microwave. Children
often learn how to use this machine long before mastering the stove
or oven. Many families go through an entire day without turning on the
stove, but the same is not so truthfully spoken about the microwave.
Being such a standard home appliance allows for much variety. Microwaves
come in many colors and styles. Some are designed to attach above an
oven, others are freestanding. There are small, personal sizes which
fit well inside the college student's dorm room, and larger sizes for
larger families. Whatever your need, browse our selection to find the
