A
mailbox is a receptacle for the mail of a home or business and is also
known as a letter box. Often, mailboxes are created from metal or plastic
but occasionally wood or other alternative materials are used. They
come in many sizes and are set-up in several different ways. Some houses
simply use mail slots, which are built into doors. Others have a box
attached to the home or a freestanding mailbox located somewhere easy
to spot on their property.
When selecting a mailbox for your home, there are additional qualities
one should consider along with what appeals to your design sensibilities.
A mailbox should stand out so that the mailman can easily find it. In
some areas, durability may be a priority due to weather or frequency
of neighborhood vandalism (in many places, mailboxes are an easy and
common target for such acts.) It is also worth checking out the postal
guidelines for your area to learn if there are any particular regional
concerns you should have for mailbox labeling or placement.
