Mahogany
furniture has often been praised for its quality, elegance, and durability.
Originally, mahogany was the term used for the wood of the Swietenia
mahagoni tree species. This species is more commonly known as the West
Indian or Cuban Mahogany.
Today, the name mahogany is used in reference to a sizable variety
of dark-colored wood. It generally has a very straight grain with few,
if any, voids or pockets. The reputation it has for workability as well
as being long-lasting has made it a great choice for cabinetwork. It
is slow to rot and has a reddish-brown color that darkens with time.
When polished, even darkened mahogany furniture will display a beautiful
red sheen.
