The
use of linen as a fabric has been around for thousands of years. This
textile is created from the fibers of the flax plant, an annual plant
with sparse leaves and pale blue flowers. The fibers used to create
linen come from the bast or skin of the plant's stem.
Linen is a comfortable, beautiful, and easily embellished fabric. It
is exceptionally durable, and can deal with fairly harsh cleaning practices.
This makes it a very sanitary fabric. For many years it has been used
in situations involving sickness, death, and even sacramental purposes.
Traditionally, linen was also used for most fabric-related purposes
in the home. Today, when one says, "linens" they can be referring
to a variety of textiles used for bed, bath, table and kitchen needs.
