Kitchen décor is one of the most overlooked kinds of décor you can have in a home, but it is also one of the most important. When you are entertaining guests, isn’t it true that often a large amount of time is spent in the kitchen or the dining room? And isn’t it true that the kitchen is a room that you and your family spend many hours in, not just cooking and eating but doing homework, paying bills, reading, and chatting?

If this is true, then why wouldn’t you want to make this area of your home as nice as possible so that your guests can leave with a positive attitude about their visit to your home and so that your family can always ‘feel at home’ when in their own home?

Improving the look of your kitchen is not nearly as difficult as it may seem. There are a few simple things that you can do that will make your kitchen a nicer place for both you and your guests to be.

• Hang the pots – You, of course, can throw the pots into one of the low cabinets and only get them out when they are needed, or you can store them with a little bit of style. Because many of these pots and pans are actually a nice silver or copper color, they can be nice items to display.

These are best displayed on a large hanging rack that hangs just above the stove area. This provides easy access and also allows you to show off your cookware. It can be so frustrating to sort through clanging pots and pans within a cabinet, looking for the right one. Why not make your choice visible and obvious and easy?

• For everything, there is a season – You may want to consider changing the kitchen décor at least four times a year. Doing this will allow the kitchen to be accentuated by the weather that surrounds it on the outside of the home.

This means that you can change things like plants, pot holders, towels, pictures and whatever else may help accentuate a season.

• Counter attack – Some people lobe to put all kinds of different items on their counters. This can include anything from small tabletop fountains to baskets full of magazines or newspapers.

Others, however, like to keep the counter as clear and as simple as possible. Many will go to great lengths to see that there are no items placed on the counter so that the kitchen’s simplicity is conserved. Consider putting your toaster, blender, coffee maker, flour bin, and other such items away in a cabinet to free up room. Only have the necessities on your counter. All other items should be put away, but within easy access.

• Plants are nice – If you have used plants to decorate your kitchen before, you already know about the fact that they seem to bring more life and energy to the kitchen area. Those who have avoided using plants because they are too hard to keep up with may be surprised to learn how easy it really is to keep them alive.

One of the common complaints among people who have tried to keep plants, but have not been able to is that they simply cannot remember to water them. This problem is easily remedied. All you need to do is simply write “water plants” on your calendar every few days.

Also, consider a greenhouse window above your sink. It is a great place to have various spices and herbs growing (ones that you can later cook with). And to water them, you need only pull out your retractable sprayer and gently douse the plants with water.

• Light it up – Lighting is important in every room of the home. There are two main choices people have for lighting in the kitchen.

The first choice is to put a small lamp on the counter area or somewhere else in the room. For the times of the day when you want a lot of extra light, like dinner time, where there is likely much conversation to be had, you can use this lamp to create more light.

The other choice is to include a dimmer light in the kitchen area. This allows you to create the right amount of light for the right time of day. Getting up for a midnight snack, for example, would require less light than you might need at other times of the day.

Be sure to have task lighting above your prep area and stove – these are places where you need bright light for cooking. Under cabinet lighting is both useful and decorative.

Kitchen décor is a favorite among home decorators because there are so many options. Perhaps the easiest way to decorate is to think of a theme and stay within the parameters of this theme.
